Suvarnabhumi International Airport Overview | Bangkok
The name Suvarnabhumi was given by HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej (pictured right inspecting a model of the new Suvarnabhumi Airport) at an auspicious foundation stone laying ceremony on January 19, 2002.
Suvarnabhumi means "The Golden Land"? which is a traditional name for the Thailand-Cambodia-Laos-Burma region

Suvarnabhumi Airport covers an area of approximately 20,000 rais (8,000 acres). The new Airport is located about 30 kilometres (19 miles) to the east of Bangkok in Bang Phli District, Samut Prakarn Province and is about 25 km from downtown Bangkok
- 130 passport control checkpoints for arrivals, 72 for departures.
- 26 customs control checkpoints for arrivals, 8 for departures.
- 22 baggage conveyor belts.
- 360 check-in counters. There are 100 additional counters for passengers without luggage.
- 107 moving walkways.
- 102 elevators.
- 83 escalators.
- 18 slanted moving
sideways.

The passenger terminal is seven stories high
and ithas 563,000 square meters of floor space,
this replaces Hong Kong's Chep Lap Kok airport as
theworld's largest.
International cargo facilities
are housed within a90,000 square metre terminal. They
are divided intofour zones: Express Cargo Zone,
Customers AirlineZone, Thai Cargo and the Alliance Zone - there's
alsoa temperature-controlled perishable centre.

The airport has a 600,000 square metre Customs FreeZone and
14 warehouses that employ the very latest
inlogistics technology. Raw materials and parts importedinto the
country for assembly can be exportedexpeditiously
without passing through customs. Inaddition to speeding
up supply chain management,customs free zones are considered
outside of "Thaicustoms territory" and allow for the
importation and subsequent export of goods without being
subject toimport taxes or other duties. Taxes only apply
oncethe goods enter Thailand for consumption.
The main automotive route to the new
airport is via aneight-lane road linking the
terminal with theBangkok-Chonburi highway, in addition
to connectionswith the Rom Klao and King Kaew Roads,
Bangna-Trad Road and Burapha Vithee Expressway, as well as
aconnection to On Nut Road. |
Additionally, a rail connection will
be establishedbetween Suvarnabhumi and Makkasan train station
in Bangkok within the next one to two years,
offeringpassengers a mere 15-minute transit to the city.

The control tower is 132.2 meters high. It is the world's tallest control tower. It has the ability to manage approximately 76 flights per hour.
